Yes: Chiclana de la Frontera is inside the path of the total solar eclipse on Monday 2 August 2027. In the town centre, totality lasts about 3 minutes 29 seconds, from 10:45:16 to 10:48:44 Central European Summer Time (CEST, UTC+2). The Sun will be 38° above the horizon, almost due east (azimuth 95°). The partial eclipse starts at 09:40:47 and ends at 11:59:51. On La Barrosa beach totality is a little longer, from about 3 min 40 s at the northern end to 3 min 47 s at Novo Sancti Petri, and 3 min 50 s by the Torre del Puerco.

Chiclana is the biggest beach town on the Costa de la Luz, with about 90,900 residents and 448,802 hotel guests in 2025 (INE, which only counts this tourist point from March to October). In summer the town swells: the council estimated it came close to 238,000 people in July 2024. For the eclipse it sits in a good spot, about 37 km inside the northern edge of the path, so small changes of position cost you only a few seconds. This page gives our times to the second for 13 places from Jerez to Vejer, then where to stand, the weather, transport and what the town council is preparing.
What time is the eclipse in Chiclana on 2 August 2027?

Our calculation with Skyfield and the JPL DE421 ephemeris, with a smooth lunar edge, at sea level (the Cerro de Santa Ana at 50 m). The Sancti Petri castle stands on an islet that belongs to San Fernando, not Chiclana. Published figures for Chiclana agree closely: snowy.es gives 3 min 29 s (10:45:15 to 10:48:44), eclipse-solaire.fr 3 min 29 s, solar-eclipse.info 3 min 28 s (10:45:06 to 10:48:35), Eclipseando quotes the IGN at 10:45:06 to 10:48:34, and the town council says 3 min 28 s. TresEclipses gives 3 min 33 s, the longest figure we found. Differences of a few seconds come from the exact point chosen and the model of the Moon's edge, so treat the figures as "about".
For the rest of the province, see our guide to Cádiz and Tarifa, the guide to the total eclipse in Spain and the eclipse times in 125 cities.
How far is Chiclana from the edge of the path?
Far enough not to worry. By our calculation the northern limit of totality crosses this part of Cádiz province at about 36.75° N, just north of Jerez, roughly 37 km north of Chiclana. The centre line passes far to the south, across the Strait towards Tangier, where totality lasts almost 4 min 50 s.
The rule on this coast is simple: the further south and the closer to the sea, the longer the eclipse. Cádiz city, nearer the edge, gets about 2 min 53 s; Chiclana town about 3 min 29 s; the south end of La Barrosa about 3 min 47 s; Conil about 4 min 01 s; and Tarifa, at the tip of the peninsula, about 4 min 38 s. Jerez, close to the edge, gets only about 1 min 37 s. For guided trips along this coast, see our roundup of Spain total eclipse tours.
Where is the best place to watch the eclipse in Chiclana?
Almost anywhere with an open view to the east. At 10:47 the Sun stands 38° up, nearly due east, over land. That surprises people on the beach: Chiclana's coast faces west, out to the Atlantic, so if you look at the sea the Sun is behind you. Turn round. At 38° the dunes, hotels and pines behind the beach are well below the Sun, so the view is clear from the sand.
- La Barrosa beach: the long Blue Flag beach (Blue Flag 2026 to 2027) that runs from Torre Bermeja in the north to Novo Sancti Petri in the south. Sources disagree on its length, from 4 km to almost 8 km. About 3 min 40 s to 3 min 47 s, with room for crowds and wooden walkways for access. Physics teacher Antonio Carmona, who has given the town's eclipse talks, names La Barrosa and its seafront promenade among the viewing places.
- Torre del Puerco: a 16th-century watchtower about 7 m high at the southern end of La Barrosa, with a car park nearby and a view along the whole beach. About 3 min 50 s, the longest totality in the municipality.
- Sancti Petri: the former tuna-fishing village and marina at the mouth of the Caño de Sancti Petri, also a Blue Flag beach. About 3 min 34 s. The castle on its islet (3 min 38 s) is reached by boat in about 15 minutes, but it lies to the west, away from the eclipsed Sun, and boat capacity on the day is unknown.
- Cerro de Santa Ana: the hill (49.8 m) with the 18th-century hermitage above the town. The council opened its park for the 12 August 2026 eclipse. About 3 min 28 s, and the town centre is right below it.
- Town centre and the marshes: the Bahía de Cádiz natural park, with its salt pans, is flat and open. Note that this is a protected area: keep to paths and public spaces.
Whatever spot you choose, keep your glasses on for the whole partial phase: our guide on how to use eclipse glasses safely explains each step.
What is the weather like in Chiclana in early August?
Usually sunny, but this coast has one known risk: sea fog. AEMET, Spain's met office, gives these August normals (1981 to 2010): Cádiz has an average high of 27.9 °C; Jerez airport, inland, has 33.5 °C, 334 hours of sunshine and 19.9 clear days in the month. Jay Anderson's Eclipsophile, the standard reference on eclipse weather, warns of "a threat of morning cloud and fog on the coast, but generally clear skies inland", says the Levante wind "allows any marine cloud to pack up against the coast", and gives practical advice: "A short move inland will often settle the problem unless the low cloud is particularly wide spread." In its sample, Cádiz had the Sun visible on 88% of days. The eclipse falls at mid-morning, when fog has not always cleared, so check the sky early and be ready to drive a few kilometres inland, for example towards Medina-Sidonia or Vejer, which are also in the path.

How do you get to Chiclana for the eclipse?
- By air: the nearest airport is Jerez, about 49 km by road. Seville, Gibraltar and Málaga airports are further away; Gibraltar and Málaga are themselves inside the path.
- By tram: the Trambahía tram-train has run since October 2022 between Chiclana and Cádiz through San Fernando: 24 km and 21 stops, about every half hour, with 37 trips each way on weekdays and 19 at weekends (Junta de Andalucía). The trip takes just over half an hour.
- By bus: line M-020 of the Consorcio de Transportes Bahía de Cádiz links Chiclana and Cádiz, up to every 15 minutes at peak times. Long-distance coaches from Málaga and Algeciras also stop in Chiclana.
- By train: Chiclana has no Renfe station. The nearest are in San Fernando and Cádiz, connected by the tram.
Expect heavy traffic on eclipse morning: the whole Bay of Cádiz is in the path and Chiclana is already one of its busiest summer towns. 2 August 2027 is not a public holiday in Andalucía; the regional August holiday is Monday 16 August (Decree 84/2026). Chiclana's local holidays for 2027 had not been published when we checked.
Is Chiclana planning anything for the eclipse?
Yes, more than most towns. In summer 2025 the council launched an eclipse website (chiclana.es/eclipse) with a countdown, safety advice and a tool that gives the times for any point in the municipality, put countdown displays in municipal buildings and said it will place volunteers at observation points. For the partial eclipse of 12 August 2026, about 93% low in the evening sky here, it opened the park of the Ermita de Santa Ana and recommended certified glasses. The Junta de Andalucía counts 31 municipalities in Cádiz province (115 in Andalucía) where the eclipse is total, and names Chiclana among them. As of 6 November 2026 we found no detailed 2027 programme, viewing-area list or traffic plan; we will add them here when they are published.
When can you take your eclipse glasses off in Chiclana?
Only during totality: in the town centre from about 10:45:16 to 10:48:44, when the Moon covers the Sun completely. Before that, from 09:41, and after, until 12:00, you are watching a partial eclipse and need eclipse glasses certified to ISO 12312-2 (in Europe, EN ISO 12312-2 with a CE mark). Sunglasses are never enough. Put your glasses back on the moment the first bright point of sunlight returns. If you are not sure the eclipse is total where you stand, keep them on.
Already have a pair? Read ISO 12312-2 explained: how to check a certificate, whether 2026 glasses can be reused in 2027 and what doctors know about eclipse eye damage.
Tember eclipse glasses are certified to EN ISO 12312-2:2015 and carry the CE mark; the certificate and test reports are on our compliance documents page. They come in packs of 4 to 100 pairs, for families, groups and hotels. See the glasses. Equipping a hotel or a group? See bulk eclipse glasses.
FAQ
Is Chiclana de la Frontera in the path of totality in 2027?
Yes, well inside it. The northern limit of totality runs about 37 km north of the town. Totality lasts about 3 minutes 29 seconds in the town centre and up to about 3 minutes 50 seconds at the south end of La Barrosa beach.
What time is the total eclipse in Chiclana?
In the town centre totality runs from about 10:45:16 to 10:48:44 CEST (UTC+2), with maximum at 10:47:00. The partial eclipse starts at 09:40:47 and ends at 11:59:51.
Is totality longer on La Barrosa beach than in town?
Yes, slightly. The beach is further south-west, deeper in the path: about 3 min 40 s at Torre Bermeja, 3 min 44 s in the middle, 3 min 47 s at Novo Sancti Petri and 3 min 50 s by the Torre del Puerco.
Which way should I face on the beach?
Away from the sea. At totality the Sun is 38° up, almost due east, over the land behind the beach. Chiclana's beaches face west, so turn your back to the water.
What if there is fog on the coast that morning?
Move a few kilometres inland. Eclipsophile notes that morning sea fog is a risk on this coast and that a short move inland often solves it. Towns such as Medina-Sidonia and Vejer are also in the path.
Can I look at the eclipse in Chiclana without glasses?
Only during the roughly three and a half minutes of totality. For the partial phases before and after, from 09:41 to 12:00, use eclipse glasses certified to ISO 12312-2.
